The new clubhouse, inside and outside, on 18 December 2015
Tyne Amateur Rowing Club is in a very healthy state and growing steadily. As a result of the growth we came to realise in 2014 that the much loved 'old' clubhouse had to go and be replaced. We decided that we really needed improved and larger training, changing and storage facilities.
So in the second half of 2016 we built (or had built for us) a modern, spacious, purpose-designed building to meet demand from existing and potential new members. We also hope to open up the club to new, non-rowing (but active) users and provide space for rowing related social activity.

The new building with lots of room will allow the club to work closely with new partners including we hope Norcare, The Percy Hedley Foundation, Visually Impaired North East (VINE), Newcastle’s Olympic weightlifting club, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities and the City Council.
This £1m project was being funded by a £500k Sport England grant, a generous bequest from John Dalkin (a former club member), a loan from the City Council and sponsorship from local private sector businesses as well as fundraising activities organised by the Club.
The clubhouse was opened formally by the Duchess of Northumberland on 18 June 2016 - see a report and photos here.
The new facilities include:
- a large boat storage area
- a specific area for storage of launch boats and workshop area
- male and female changing room and toilet facilities
- a weights room
- dedicated internal bike storage area
- lift between ground and first floor levels, allowing for disabled access
- function room
- bar area and kitchen
- physio/first aid area
- conference room
- office
