A new book on sporting built heritage in Tyne and Wear was launched on 9 September and we are on the cover.
English Heritage has published Played in Tyne and Wear, the latest instalment in the acclaimed Played in Britain series that explores Britain’s unique sporting and recreational heritage. On the cover is a photo of Tyne Rowing Club's old boathouse at Scotswood; we have receved a small fee for its use!
Inside there is a more up-to-date photo of the current boathouse with some of the Poly girls displaying their skills at boat handling - see right.

In Played in Tyne and Wear, author Lynn Pearson guides the reader on an intimate tour of the area’s sporting treasures; from the site of the celebrated Blaydon Races in Newcastle to a cockfighting pit in Tynemouth, and from the cantilevered heights of Sunderland’s Stadium of Light to the homespun delights of Britain’s only listed pigeon cree in Ryhope.
Lavishly illustrated with archive images, specially commissioned contemporary photography and detailed mapping, Pearson’s study celebrates thesports and pastimes played in Tyne and Wear and the North East’s reputation for producing great athletes and great events.
If you want to oder a copy @ £13.99 (£1 off RRP), contact the Secretary.
