Pont Head gets both fog and sun

Saturday, 24 March 2012
With hot weather and the juniors on fire we couldn't have asked for a better day at our end-of-winter head race for juniors. Summer appeared to have arrived early, with t-shirts and shorts the order of the day (once the early morning fog had lifted, anyway). There were 3 divisions which started later than usual at 12.30pm due to a low tide in the morning; but we kept to schedule and finished prompt at 6.00pm.

The Division 1 started off with 4 of the older juniors competing in singles, nearly all of which pulled out all the stops and performed to their best, each winning their separate categories. Tom Hutchinson came in at 11.09.96 not only to win his category but was also the quickest single in the whole division. Other wins came from Jake Bratley crossing the line in 12.40.44 and then Andy Ireland in 13.35.63.

Division 2 soon followed with a win from the J14 4x+ crossing the line in 10.44.80 and winning their category by 41sec.

Cox Robert Fuller, strokeman Rick McDonnell with Matthew Crooks, John McAndrew and bowman James Maccabe rowed themselves to victory and in doing so booked their place at the Junior Inter Regional Regatta to be held at Nottingham on 28th April.

After some well needed food cooked by the great kitchen staff, Division 3 finally got underway. With the sun still blazing, the junior squad had the largest number of boats competing in the largest division. With the help from the tide another win came from the J14 2x Matthew Crooks and Connor Beswick who paddled their way to victory in their category in 09.56.93, finishing in the quickest time over the course by the junior squad.

Shortly after another J14 2x James Maccabe and Jake Bratley finished in a respectable second in 10.04.95 and Rick McDonnell and John McAndrew crossing the line in 11.53.04 finishing again, in a respectable 3rd place in their category. Claire Smark and Bridget Stratford also won in the WJ18 2x coming across the line in 10.37.98.

Not only did the squad have a number of wins, they also finished runners up by one point to Talkin Tarn RC who won the Victor Ludorum. Full results are here.
