The Women's squad is a fun, friendly group of girls who enjoy rowing together. We are made up of all ages and abilities and currently have an active membership of around 16, which we hope will continue to grow. Each year we integrate girls from the intermediate squad and the older juniors.
We welcome new members who have rowing/sculling experience and try to cater for those who want to simply use rowing to keep fit and those who want to row and race at both a local and national level. Complete beginners should go to the Learn to Row page for advice. The squad has been improving steadily over the last few years and under our coach, Tony Rutter, we hope this will continue.
In 2008 a Tyne eight won the novice pennant at WEHoRR and we had a double crew reach the final of National Championships. We also had an eight qualify through to the knock out stages of Henley Women's Regatta. In 2009 we had an eight finish in the top 150 at WEHoRR and at Henley we had a coxed four qualify through the time trial to the knockout stages and a double reach the semi finals.
In March 2010 our IM2 crew came in at 74 in WEHoRR and a coxed quad got to the semis of their event at Henley. In 2011, we improved our ranking at WEHoRR by 3 to come in at 71. For Henley Women's Regatta we entered a Senior 8 and although we didn't win, we had a good outing against a very strong American crew.
Training
We welcome rowers wanting to train at all levels. We are fortunate to have our coach, Tony, who sets a challenging programme to follow and gives up much of his time to be at water and land training sessions.
For those wishing to be considered for boats racing at a national level, training involves four compulsory sessions a week which include: Tuesday water session, Thursday ergo session, Saturday water session (often two outings), Sunday water session. We are also currently doing Wednesday Pilates and fitness sessions. Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions are 6.00pm start and Saturday and Sunday are usually 8.00am (but check).
Crews will be selected for the national competitions on a merit basis. Ergo times, technical ability and ability to move boats will form the basis of selection by our coach. Those who do not want to wish to compete at the higher levels are welcome to join in the sessions of their choosing.
Fun
Apart from rowing we all enjoy a night out or two together and a highlight of the year is the annual Winter Ball which brings all members of the club together for a night of fun and romance.
