Tyne Head was a resounding success, with the 1st VIII winning the event outright by over 30 seconds, overcoming horrible conditions to beat Newcastle’s 2nd VIII, Tees RC and Edinburgh University. The Tyne 2nd VIII came in 7th place, ahead of all of the Durham Colleges.
The North of England Head had a much stronger field including big names such as Agecroft and Gosvenor. The 1st VIII came in at 7th overall with the 2nd VIII only 24 seconds behind in 18th place, achieving 3rd place in Senior 3.
The Head of the River Race saw the 1st VIII come in at 69th of 409 finishers – the best finish by a Tyne crew for 10 years, only 20 seconds behind 26th placed Agecroft, who won the Jackson Trophy for non-Thames based British clubs. Tyne was 6th of 65 crews eligible for this trophy.
The 2nd VIII started at 295 and overcame the slower stream and heavy traffic to come in at 146th – a net gain of 149 places. This is thought to be the first time Tyne has got 2 crews into the top 150 for at least 20 years and we join Agecroft, Grosvenor and Nottingham as the only Jackson Trophy eligible clubs to achieve this.
The Senior Men’s Squad would like to thank Jay Roberts and David Robinson for their massive help in coaching, selecting and preparing the crews for these races.
The Squad at the moment is gearing up for the summer regatta season. Despite losing some student members to university rowing, we have been strengthened by some new recruits. The aim is to get at least 8 seats (in either an eight or two fours) to Henley Royal Regatta in July.
