WIM3 8+ Great effort, good race and a good row considering the crew had only had 1 previous outing together – definitely held their own.
Sunday
WIM3 4x+ (Lynne, Louise, Emma, Emily) Great effort, but unfortunately were pipped at the post by Leeds RC.
Champs 2x (Jen, Natalie) Fantastic row and the double got ahead of their competitors from DARC. Unfortunately, an unfair DQ meant that going into the second half of the long course race the double knew they could not win. After an inspection of the renowned bridge the double continued to push the crew from DARC but it wasn’t to be.
WIM2 4+ (Laura, Laura, Vanessa, Ailsa, Caz – cox) WIN – 3 rounds, 1 set of school girls, 1 clash of blades and a comfortable win in the final meant the four were unbeaten going into Henley.
WIM2 8+ (Jen, Nat, Laura, Laura, Ailsa, Vanessa, Cat P, Liz, Caz – cox) WIN – a chance for Tyne to retain their splash and dash eights crown. Hatfield in the semi final, Durham School in the second who suitably wound up the experienced crew by keeping them waiting for at least 30 minutes in the pouring rain – a win was a must!
Henley Women’s Regatta
Women’s Senior Double Sculls (Jen & Nat) A sunny day on the Friday made for perfect conditions for time trials. The double put in an excellent performance to secure them a spot in the next round of racing. The Saturday’s conditions had changed dramatically. Gone was the lovely warm sunny summer weather and it was replaced by a cold, strong tail wind. The double came up against one of the favourites of the competition – Sport Imperial. The double went out off the blocks rating high and stuck with Imperial for the first part of the race. Imperial reached a rhythm and pulled away from Tyne. The girls put in a push to close the gap in the last half of the race, but Imperial took the win, knocking the double out of the competition.
Women’s Intermediate Coxed Fours (Laura, Laura, Vanessa, Ailsa, Caz – cox) - Time trials went brilliantly for the four and it seemed that the crew had done enough to secure a good draw for the next round. Molesey were the competition for the first round on Friday afternoon and the crew beat them convincingly by 4 lengths. A good row was had by the crew. The next round on Saturday in the windy conditions brought Barnes Bridge Ladies. Another win, but an unconvincing row by the four – happy with the win, disappointed in the performance. Through to the semi finals at Henley, nerves were abundant. City of Cambridge – a crew decked out in their club kit with their blues kit over the top were up on the start line for the semis. Tyne held them on for the start, but once the stride set in City pulled away. Tyne attempted to pull back, but only managed to stay with them and stop the gap from increasing. A win for City, who went on to win the trophy against Royal Chester.
A fantastic weekend down at Henley. A big thanks goes to Tony for being chauffeur, coach, handbag and so on. A big thanks to Caz for being a fantastic cox and a great addition to the squad (“don’t look at them!” The best advice of the weekend!). Big thanks also goes to our supporters – the Hardy’s (including Jasmine and Lily), Hannah, Vanessa’s family, Daddy Croisdale and all the texts, phone calls and well wishes!
It’s been a great few months for the women’s squad and just shows the depth, diversity and ability that this squad posses. The summer isn’t quite over just yet and I think we have a few more wins in us yet. Next on the cards is Talkin Tarn and Nat Champs…we shall see what damage we can do there!
