Junior National Championships
This year Tyne was represented by juniors two doubles, a single and in a composite 4-. One junior double achieved a creditable place in the final against a strong field. Although they didn't medal, some potential for future years and the coming season, whilst the other double, still J13's raced in J14 doubles. Finishing third in their heat gained them a place in the repecharge where they finished strongly but not quite fast enough for the final. This was a strong display from a young crew and we look forward to seeing them develop further in 2009 - 2010.

The last club representative in juniors made the semi final of J17 1x. A strong headwind and strong opposition saw him finishing 6th but pleased that he had made the semis. In his composite 4- with Durham School, they rowed well in the heats but were just piped for place in the final. Having gone into the repecharge as one of the faster crews they rowed a little below expectation and were disappointed not to reach the final, perhaps indicative of only one outing before the race in the crew!

The young group of juniors we have going into 2009 - 10 season all look very enthusiastic and have a strong base to move forward as the season progresses with help from Colin, John and David, amongst others. Several of the older juniors, J16's and above will be rowing with their respective senior squads and will hopefully acquit themselves very well under the men’s and women’s senior coaches.

Senior Men Summer Season Report
The Tyne Senior Men have had a successful summer racing at national events in two coxless fours. Both fours raced at Metropolitan Regatta, getting through to their respective finals of the A and B divisions of Intermediate Coxless fours on the Saturday, finishing in 6th and 5th places.

Tyne Regatta saw the B Crew beat DARC comfortably and the A Crew were within a length of NUBC's star studded top four in an exciting race.

The A crew attended Marlow Regatta in a bid to Pre-qualify for Henley and comfortably got to the Semi-Finals but narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Also, Si Forster raced at Marlow in his single and did well to reach the Repechage, missing out on the final in an extremely strong field.

The Henley Stewards announced a large entry of 63 crews for the 32 places in the Wyfold this year, and subsequently raised the bar high for pre-qualification, with both of our crews facing the task of coming in the top 15 out of 46 crews at Qualifiers. Both crews qualified.

The draw gave both crews tough opponents in the first round, with the 'A' crew facing Glasgow RC, one of the top seeded crews. The 'B' crew faced Mitsubishi RC from Japan, also seeded and both crews were knocked out in the first round. However, crews they had both previously beaten made it as far as the Friday, tantalisingly showing what could have been with an easier draw!

Despite the lack of a win in the main event, this marks a significant step forward for Tyne Men's rowing as it was the first time that two crews have qualified for Henley in many years. Next year we hope to build on this and have crews progress further through the event.
