Senior Men Summer Season Report
The Tyne Senior Men have had a successful summer racing at national events in two coxless fours. Both fours raced at Metropolitan Regatta, getting through to their respective finals of the A and B divisions of Intermediate Coxless fours on the Saturday, finishing in 6th and 5th places.
Tyne Regatta saw the B Crew beat DARC comfortably and the A Crew were within a length of NUBC's star studded top four in an exciting race.
The A crew attended Marlow Regatta in a bid to Pre-qualify for Henley and comfortably got to the Semi-Finals but narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Also, Si Forster raced at Marlow in his single and did well to reach the Repechage, missing out on the final in an extremely strong field.
The Henley Stewards announced a large entry of 63 crews for the 32 places in the Wyfold this year, and subsequently raised the bar high for pre-qualification, with both of our crews facing the task of coming in the top 15 out of 46 crews at Qualifiers. Both crews qualified.
The draw gave both crews tough opponents in the first round, with the 'A' crew facing Glasgow RC, one of the top seeded crews. The 'B' crew faced Mitsubishi RC from Japan, also seeded and both crews were knocked out in the first round. However, crews they had both previously beaten made it as far as the Friday, tantalisingly showing what could have been with an easier draw!
Despite the lack of a win in the main event, this marks a significant step forward for Tyne Men's rowing as it was the first time that two crews have qualified for Henley in many years. Next year we hope to build on this and have crews progress further through the event.
